The European Photovoltaic Industry Association believes that policymakers need to pay more attention to battery storage systems as a complementary technology to solar power systems. The European Photovoltaic Industry Association pointed out that in order to achieve the climate goals of the Paris Agreement and have the opportunity to limit global warming to 1.5 °C, the 2030 National Energy Climate Plan (NECP) target for the deployment of solar power installations must more than double, The battery energy storage system has great potential in integrating clean energy.

Walburga Hemetsberger said, “Combining solar power installations and energy storage is the key to achieving climate neutrality in the EU by 2050. It will not only enable the EU to increase the share of renewable energy, but importantly, solar+storage projects will Provide homes and households with reliable, clean and cost-effective energy. National policymakers must recognize this enormous potential and consider deploying more distributed energy storage systems when revising national energy and climate plans.”

Some existing policy frameworks in Europe are actively promoting the use of battery storage, such as the net metering policy in the Netherlands. Approaches that leverage battery storage to play a greater role in the power system, such as virtual power plants (VPPs), should also be supported.
